Term

Saucepan

A round, deep cooking vessel with tall straight sides, a long handle, and typically 1 to 4 quart capacity, designed primarily for cooking liquids and making sauces. The high sides promote even heat distribution and prevent splashing, while the narrow base concentrates heat for efficient reduction and evaporation. Despite its name, saucepans function as both pans for reducing and pots for simmering.

  • Choose heavy-bottomed saucepans for even heat distribution and to prevent scorching delicate sauces.

  • Use saucepans for grains like rice and quinoa – the tall sides trap steam for perfect texture.

  • Perfect for small-batch cooking of pasta, vegetables, or single servings.

  • Deglaze saucepans after cooking proteins to capture fond for instant pan sauces.

  • Look for models with helper handles on larger sizes to safely pour hot liquids.

There was a time when I naively thought Busta Rhymes, Modest Mouse, Missy Elliott, and so many others were sell-outs…but I get it now. Certain pages and posts may contain Amazon affiliate links – I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Every item linked is a product I believe in based on my personal experience. Sometimes I'll link to Target, Costco, or another store instead – usually because the price or product is just better (looking at you, Ball jars). I don't earn anything from those links; they're simply where I'd shop myself.
